アレカヤシ　Areca Palm
ヤシ科　Arecaceae

椰子の葉はたくさん種類がありますが、その中でもこのアレカヤシはいけばなでよく使われます。茎が曲線的に伸びて靡く姿は、南国の風を感じさせてくれるようです。

小さな葉が規則的に並び、全体として一つの大きな葉のような形になります。大胆に葉を整理して、下の方は茎をしっかりと見せると伸びやかに感じられます。

椰子には木のような太い幹が1本伸び、その上方にたくさんの葉が広がる単幹性のものと、根本から複数の枝が立ち上がる株立ち性のものがあります。このアレカヤシは株立ち性です。観葉植物として鉢植えでもよく売られています。

よく似た姿のフェニックス・ロベレニー（ロペ又はロベという通称で売られています）もよく使われます。こちらは単幹性です。自生している姿はアレカヤシと違いますが、花屋では葉の部分だけが売られているので、ほとんど見分けがつきません。

There are many kinds of palm leaves, but Areca Palm is often used in ikebana. Its curving stems that gently bend make us feel a tropical breeze.

The small leaves grow in a regular pattern, and together they look like one large leaf. If you trim the leaves boldly and show the stem clearly at the bottom, It looks like it is growing powerfully.

Some palm trees have one thick trunk with many leaves at the top—this is called “single-trunk.” Others grow several stems from the base—this is called “clump-type.” Areca Palm is the clump-type. It’s also commonly sold in pots as a houseplant.

Another plant that looks similar is Phoenix Roebelenii, often sold under the name “Rope” or “Robe.” It has a single trunk. Although its natural form is different from the Areca Palm, in flower shop only the leaves are sold, so it’s hard to tell them apart.
